PADI Mermaid Certification in Florida: Cost, Requirements, and What to Expect

So you want to get PADI Mermaid certified. Maybe you saw a mermaid at a Florida spring and thought "I want to do that," or maybe you are dreaming bigger: performing, teaching, or booking events. Either way, the PADI Mermaid program is the real, recognized way to learn, and here in Florida you can train year round! Here is exactly what it costs, what you need, and what the course is actually like.

The Simple Breakdown:

Discover Mermaid, $150 (ages 6+) - Not a certification. A one-hour experience class where you learn the basics of swimming in a monofin and tail. Perfect if you have never worn a tail and want to try it before committing.

PADI Basic Mermaid, $200 (ages 6+) - The beginner certification. You will learn to swim properly and confidently with a monofin and tail: dolphin kick technique, safe entries and exits, and real underwater confidence, all in a pool. Plan on about 2 hours in person.

PADI Mermaid, $250 (ages 10+) - The full certification, and the most popular. It includes everything in Basic, plus stronger dolphin kicks, underwater turns, and backflips. This is the certification performers and aspiring professionals get. Plan on about 8 hours total.

PADI Advanced Mermaid, $350 (ages 12+) - Closer to a freediving course. You take your skills into open water and learn open water safety and rescue. You must already hold the PADI Mermaid certification. This is a multi-day course.

Every price above includes your PADI e-learning and PADI fees. No surprise charges at checkout.

The Prerequisites:

You must complete all PADI courses in order. For example, you can’t skip from Basic to Advanced, or just take Advanced without having completed Basic and Mermaid first. You must also be able to demonstrate all skills learned in previous courses with confidence and proficiency before moving onto the next one.

Before your in-person session, you will complete the PADI e-learning online at your own pace. It needs to be finished at least a week before your session, and honestly, it is the fun part: mermaid history, technique, and safety, all from your couch.

What you need to bring

Your own monofin and mermaid tail, a mask and snorkel (no goggles), bifins, and a weight belt. If you do not own gear yet, do not guess: we keep a recommended list of safe monofins and tails, because the wrong tail is not just uncomfortable, it is unsafe. We have a limited amount of gear available to rent to those missing one or two items, but if you’re at the point where you’re taking mermaiding seriously enough to get your PADI certs, we recommend purchasing your own gear.

What the day is actually like

Your pool session happens in the Titusville area, and the exact location is sent to you privately once you book. Expect coaching the whole way through. Nobody is thrown in the deep end (literally). You will practice skills one at a time, build confidence as you go, and by the end you will be swimming in a tail like you were born with it!
